Intuition vs. Intellect: A discussion of Yes, And… & More
Improv rules like Yes, and… and Make Your Partner Look Good, makes for some wonderful improvisational moments, but is limited. The dimension of Space is often left out and the connection between players is often intellectual (from the head). Having a good sidecoach to support players going forth into the X area with true connection will take the burden off of the players having to be cognizant of Yes, And… (adding information) and trying to Make their partner “Look Good”. Those directives are well-meant and many players intuitively get Yes, And… and other rules, but only because some players have an innate sense of intuition. Those players make interesting offers and become the focus of many a scene. They require others not so intuitive to Yes, And… (agree and add information). Follow the Follower establishes a bond between players that allow them to transcend Yes, And… and other rules by going for the not-known. Only then can something new happen to the player.
